California’s Proposition 65 Information

You may have seen the following warning on certain products:

What is California Proposition 65?

California Proposition 65, officially known as the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act, requires the State of California to maintain and publish a list of chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm.

Under this law, companies are required to provide a clear warning if their products may expose consumers to any listed chemicals above specific threshold levels. These warnings are commonly found throughout California in places such as restaurants, grocery stores, hotels, and retail products.

Why Does This Warning Appear?

Proposition 65 requires businesses to provide a warning if a product contains a listed chemical at levels exceeding 1/1000th of the “Safe Harbor Level” established by the State of California.

It’s important to understand:

  • A Proposition 65 warning does not mean a product is unsafe
  • The law is designed to provide transparency so consumers can make informed decisions
  • Many listed chemicals, including heavy metals like lead, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury, occur naturally in soil and water

As a result, trace amounts may be present in plant-based ingredients commonly used in dietary supplements.
